Odense is 75 minutes from Copenhagen and 90 from Aarhus by train, which makes it an easy stop rather than a detour.
The centre is walkable end to end in 20 minutes. You do not need transport for the main sights.
Egeskov Castle is 30 minutes south by bus and needs half a day for the gardens and museums.
Prices are noticeably lower than Copenhagen for food and hotels, often by a third.
